Passage G.A.A. Club Hall of Fame - Mick Kenny
In the 1920's and early 30's Passage had a very capable hurling team which managed to win two intermediate
county championships in 1924 and 1930.
The team was made up from seven or eight families with all the players living in the centre of the town.
Among several sets of brothers on this team were Johnny and Mick Kenny, and with
Passage as intermediate county champions Mick was nominated as captain of the Cork junior hurling team for 1925.
Cork went on to win the All Ireland title defeating Limerick, Tipperary, and Clare in the Munster championship,
and recording comprehensive wins over Galway and Dublin in the All Ireland series.
Another Passage player, Paddy Healy, later to become chairman, and president of the club was also on the winning panel
during the course of the year.
After Passage again won the intermediate county championship in 1930 the town was to suffer badly at the hands
of the greatest economic recession of the century with many emigrating in pursuit of work. Among those that departed
their native town were Mick and Johnny Kenny but they continued their hurling carrier while in the U.S.A.
They had the distinction of lining out for American selection, which played Ireland in 1932. When Mick Kenny
retired in the 1970s he again returned to live out his retirement years in his beloved Passage.
