Oct 2nd 2011 - Passage U11 Hurling Blitz

Written by  Administrator

Passage Under 11's hosted an 11 a-side hurling blitz at Manning Park on Sunday 2nd October 2011 with 5 visiting teams: Bishopstown, Brian Dillons, Carrig na BhFear, Tracton and Mayfield.  We split the blitz into 2 groups - Passage, Brian Dillons and Carrig na BhFear playing on the main pitch and - Bishopstown, Tracton and Mayfield playing on the new pitch.

Passage played Dillons in the first game and it was a very close encounter with Dillons winning on a score of 4-0 to 0-2.  Passage totally dominated the second half and just couldn't get goals.  Dillons then played Carrig and were completely outplayed and kept scoreless by the mountain men which meant that Passage had to beat Carrig to have a chance of getting through to the final. The Carrig mentors noticed that Dillons had 13 players on the pitch in the first half of their game and this 'miscalculation' may have had a bearing on the first game against Passage!  Passage against Carrig was a great game from start to finish which was only decided by a last minute goal from Carrig after some lovely skill by their full forward. Carrig won by 2-2 to 2-1 but Passage realy played some great stuff, with Cathal Moloney in goal and Luke Tett in the middle playing especially well.  This meant that Carrig advanced to the final to play the winners from the other group.

Bishopstown fielded a very strong team and put in a fabulous display to beat Mayfield well in the first game. Tracton and Mayfield had a close game in the second match and Tracton came out on top.  Bishopstown beat Tracton then in the final group game to set up a final against Carrig na BhFear.  The final was a great game with Bishopstown building up a lead in the first half before withstanding a great comeback from Carrig in the second half.  They came through on a score of 3-2 to 2-1and were presented the cup by Passage Club Chairman Mickey O Mahony.  The teams were all competitive with Bishopstown benefitting from their large squad of under 11's to field their best available side.  A big thanks to Damien Taaffe for organising the blitz who did very well to get in Carrig na Bhfear as a late replacement after Shamrocks couldn't unfortunately couldn't field a team.  Thanks also to Sean Sheahan and Tom O Neill who reffed all the games on what was a fairly wet morning.  The visiting players, mentors and parents were delighted to get the tea, coffee and sandwiches and cakes provided in the clubhouse by Carmel Lester, Orla Sheahan, Claire Brosnan and Deirdre Lester.  We should get the benefit of a few return invites for matches after this great mornings hurling entertainment.
