October 12th 2011 - U11 Football vs Glenville

Passage Under 11 Footballers had their first Floodlit game away to Glenville on Wed 12th October 2011. We brought a squad of 17 to Glenville for this Under 11 challenge match which was played under the floodlights. The game was played with 3 periods of 15 minutes on a nice evening and it was competitive from the start when we had the advantage of the sloping pitch for the first period of 12 a side.

Passage were on the attack for the first few minutes and had a couple of wides before Josh Clarke scored a rocket of a goal off the underside of the bar.  Glenville responded but couldn't force a score out of the defence with Cathal Mololney and Jack Lester making good clearances whenever Glenville got past Michael Sheahan and Conor Lester in the half back line. Passage got another goal through Jack Stapleton who was enjoying the space out wide before cutting in for scores.  Passage were really flying in this quarter, dominating throughout but should really have been further ahead than the 2-1 to 0-0.  We had a good few wides but the goals were smaller than we're used to, but this was as maybe the best football that this team have played all year.  Glenville rallied strongly in the second period and scored 1-1 before Passage reasserted themselves with a couple of points followed by 2 quickfire goals.  The first was scored by Cathal Taaffe sliding in at the back post from a lovely cross along the ground from our newest recruit, Jamie Lee and this was quickly followed by the score of the game.  Will Fielding picked up the ball in the half forward line, beat 2 players on a solo run and buried the ball in the bottom left corner for a great goal.  Glenville weren't finished yet and pressed on again to try and get back in it.  Jack L stormed down the centre of the field after fielding a high ball and everyone looked comfortable carrying the ball and laying off simple passes. The scores were then 4-3 to 1-1 after the second period.  Jamie O Sullivan had his usual stormer of a game in the middle of the park and himself and Josh Clarke were first to almost every ball in the middle third.  Mark Coughlan covered a lot of ground and won a lot of tough 50-50 balls around the middle and started a lot of attacks.  Conor Lester had probably his best game for Passage at half back and hoovered up any ball that got past our midfield.  He was watching every ball and set us back on the attack consistently.  He stood up and slowed play when faced with ball carriers if he didn't actually take the ball away from them, as did Michael Sheahan and Mark Coughlan.  Michael Sheahan, Cathal Taaffe and Finny Mansbridge set up numerous attacks with simple direct passes.  Jamie O fielded some great balls from Glenville kickouts and we kept them penned in their own half for most of the third period.  We had moved onto 15 a side at this stage as both teams agreed to give as many players as possible as much game time as possible.  Luke Tett played very well during the second period at half back when Glenville had their best period and Adam Hallissey played some lovely passes into the full forward line of Sean O Mahony and Jamie Lee.  Dylan Walls made some good saves and swept up any balls that weren't cleared up first time by Jack L and Cathal M.  Cathal Moloney made his usual quota of huge clearing kicks down the field and Conor O Sullivan did very well and competed for any ball that came his way.  The backs operated very as much as a unit, covering for eachother just like the forwards, even though they weren't as busy as the game moved on.  Glenvilles second goal was a bit fortunate as it was from a free that was deflected past Dylan, who could do nothing as he stared into the floodlights.  Passage were encouraged to shoot for points in the last quarter and to improve on the number of wides. The interplay between the midfield, half forwards and full forward line was fabulous and in the third period the points scoring was much more accurate and some of the points taken were first class. Points were scored by Jamie O, Jamie Lee, Sean O Mahony, Adam Hallissey, Will Fielding and Mark Coughlan and the scores were very well spread over the whole side from midfield up.  The final score was Passage 4-8 Glenville 2-2.  The lads should be very proud of this performance as some of the passing was excellent and they looked a real team even when we were making changes throughout and refreshing all areas to make sure everyone got a chance to play. It was impossible to pick a man of the match really as there were so many contenders, from back to front. Apologies if any of the scorers were mixed up as the reporter was behind the (wrong) goal for most of them!
