Passage West Girls  u12 football team travelled to Bishopstown  hoping to improve on last years game which the Town beat them by double scores,Well the Passage Girls were really fired up  for this rematch and if you were not there you missed a great game of football between these two teams. The standard of football was  high and the speed of the game was very fast if you turned your head for one second you missed something.Passage captain Niamh Santry lost the toss and played with the hill in the first half.Passage had a lot of possession but again could not score.Great defending by Ellen Coleman and Grainne Quirke denied the town from scoring but in the end,  Bishopstown  were the first to score  and soon had the ball in the back of the Passage net.Passage did not panic ,Passage fought tooth and nail to get back into the game and they did with a great run by Laura O'Byrne from her back line all the way up the field to smash home a great goal.Bishopstown no 6 was causing a lot of problems for Passage and Passage knew they would have to do something special in the second half to keep her quite.Bishopstown were leading at half time.
Eddie Higgins one of the Passage west coaches came up with the special game plan for the Bishopstown no 6.So as soon as the second half started passage changed her marker and put Anna MC Swinney on her all Anna had to do was to stick to her like glue and sure  enough Anna did the job.Fair play to Eddie that's why he gets the big bucks to put these plans together.Passage were playing against the hill now and had to defend  and with the great vision of the Passage goal keeper Aoife O'Flynn made two or three great saves in the second half.Passage Moved Amy O'Neill back to the half backs and put Ria O'Mahony in the full forward position. All of the Passage girls were working there socks off.Amy O'Neill won a great ball and tried to break free only to be brought down. She got her free and her coach was telling her to slow the game down,Amy ignored this and took a fast free in to the young Erin MC Eveney who is only 9 ,Erin got to the ball first took on her player and passed to who else R,O'Mahony .and Ria did the rest by putting the ball in the back of Bishopstown net.Erin was having a great game winning  every ball, this was a pure team effort from all of the Passage  girls.Passage were in front now and Bishopstown upped the game again and were working there way down the left side of the field, they chipped  the ball over the Passage half back, and full back,if it was not for the speed and bravery of Danielle Burke (another player who is u10  )She can read the game as good as any one,Danielle raced across and beat the town to the ball. The town got there equaliser and had every one on the side line on there toes.Emma Harrington got a nasty knock on her shoulder, from the free Passage attacked again for Amy O'Neill to get another point.Bishopstown were under pressure and Emma Harrington and Laura 'o Byrne were unlucky not to scored only for the Bishopstown defence.Eimear Stapleton caught a great ball and again Passage shot wide.On came passage west biggest player Kelly MC Granaghan  and Laoise Hefferan, straight in to the full forward line they went. With the pressure from Eimear Kelly and Laoise Passage won the ball back for another great point by Ellen O'Mahony,Passage were one point up again.and the Town tried to work the ball down towards the Passage goal were it not for Anne MC Swinney ,Grainn Quirke and Amy O'Neill and Niamh Santry.Passage Laura O'Byrne who was bursting with energy did her best to get the ball forward but Passage gave a way a free and the town scored the equalising point again.Passage worked the ball up the field and Erin MC Eveney beat her player to the 50/50 ball,Erin turned inside her player and was heading straight for the goal ,Erin was pushed in the back and landed on the ground, but got no free to every ones dismay. This would have been the winning score. It was a great game that ended 2-6 to 2-6  a piece. So you could not pick a player of the match in this game as all players and subs were players of the match.Passage really did redeem themselves as a improving team. The two teams did the ladies football association proud.

On Monday 11TH of May  Passage West girls under  12s got there campaign off to a great start beating Naomh Aban by 1-10 to 3-1.Passage captain Ria O'Mahony won the toss and decided to play with the wind in the first half.Passage took full advantage of the wind and Emma Harrington was scoring points like a inter County player.Naomh Aban were playing great football  and passing the ball well but could not get pass the impressive Eimear O'Connor who was defending as if her life depended on it.This was Eimears best game so far this season as she and most off this team make up Passage  West under 14 team.Naomh Aban should have had three goals in the first half kicking two wide and Aoife O'Flynn making a great save.Passage were always in control and were 8 points to 1 point in front at half time.
They new playing against the wind in the second half was going to be hard so they attacked from the start.Ria O'Mahony got the ball and scored a great goal.Naomh Aban took control after that but Passage  weathered the storm and came out on top in the end on a score line of 1-10 to 3-1.Other players who played well on the night for passage were Emma Harrington,Eimear O'Connor who was player of the match,Orla Higgins,Ellen Coleman,Laura O'Byrne,Aoife O'Flynn and Danielle Burke.

Passage played there last under 14 game of the league at home to Granagh last Wednesday the 13TH of May.Passage lost the game on a score line of 1-2 to 4-6.Even though Passage were well beaten the game was  closer than the score line suggested.Passage tried so hard against a very strong Grenagh team but just could not score on the night.Sophie Collins and Laura  O Byrne were every where and were doing there best to stop Grenagh.Angela O'Callaghan was doing her best in the back line  getting in front and blocking..Savannah O'Rourke was again having a great game between the posts  as was Louise Walsh at full back.Danielle Mehigan caught a great ball but was unlucky not to have scored a goal.Louise Walsh was outstanding as was the little giant   Orla Higgins.Passage got another goal but was disallowed but Passage kept going.Tara Murphy was made some great runs up the middle and worked well with Emma Harrington passing the ball all the up the fied to each other which ended in a goal.Even though passage lost they still qualified for the semi finals. This is a great achievement for this team as most of the team have three years left in this grade still.A special thanks to all the team who gave up a disco night that was held in there School to play the match. We really did not think we would have a team on the night but the girls proved us wrong,so thanks again from all in the club.

A special note to Tara  Murphy from the team and club,we wish her a quick recovery and hope Tara will be back with us soon. Also Passage West would like to say a very big thank you to the Grenagh club  for helping us in  looking afterTara.

CAMOGIE

The Passage Camogie Club was re established in February 2000 and has grown into a vibrant successful club catering for girls from the ages of 6 to 16. There are currently 5 teams competing at U-11,12,13,14 +15 and the 6-10 year olds have coaching sessions every Tuesday evening in St. Peters Community School between 5 and 6pm. This season the U-11's qualified for the semi-final of the League by beating Na.Piarsaigh, Delaneys and finishing level with neighbours Douglas who were their semi final opposition. The girls unfortunately lost the semi by 2 goals but the management team of Celine Hyde and Liz Farr are delighted with the teams progress.

The team trains every Thursday between 4 and 5pm in St. Peters school pitch. The U-12's reached the quarter-final of the league for the first time ever beating Na.Piarsaigh, St. Vincents and Delaneys. Blarney proved tough opposition and beat the Passage girls by one goal to progress to the semi-final. The final score being Passage 2-1 Blarney 3-1. This team has tremendous talent and there is high hopes for next season. The U-13 team lost to Brian Dillons and Douglas in the league but won their last match against St.Vincents well.

It was a pity there was no more matches as the girls were improving with every game. At the time of writing the U-15 team are due to play in a one day Blitz in the run up to Christmas. Overall it has been a great year on the playing front with a huge improvement on performances from the teams. Off the field the club travelled to Croke Park on the 19th of September to watch Cork in the Senior and Junior Camogie All Ireland Finals. The Rebels won the Junior Final and player of the match Amanda O'Regan brought the All Ireland trophy down to the clubhouse on the Monday of the Bank Holiday weekend much to the delight of everyone in the Passage Club. Thanks to all the girls who played this year, the managers Liz Farr, Celine Hyde, Liam O'Sullivan and Lilian O'Brien for all their time and effort, Treasurer Assumpta Lydon for all her hard work, Marion Mullins who helped out at all the matches and to all the parents who provided transport during the year. Finally new members are always welcome .

LADIES FOOTBALL

Catherine O'Neill was appointed Ladies Football Team Manager back in February. Catherine played Inter County Camogie for Cork down through the years but her first love was always Gaelic Football. She moved to Passage last year and having previously set up Ladies Football Teams in Carrigaline and Mahon she offered her help in re organising the Ladies Football Club. Training was held every Tuesday night at 7pm and the girls had their first two matches (friendlies) against Nemo Rangers in Manning Park during the Family Day in June. Despite narrowly losing both games Catherine was very proud of the girls performance.

Kieran Keane was drafted in to help out with the coaching during the summer and the girls were split up into two teams U-12 and U-14. Their first competitive game in September was again against Nemo Rangers in the League and the improvement since June was remarkable. The girls put up a great show and ended up sharing the spoils with a far more experienced Nemo side. This result shows what a great job Catherine and Kieran are doing thanks to both for all their hard work. Thanks to all the girls for their effort over the season and to everyone who supported the club during the year.
