JUNIOR B FOOTBALL
Passage 1—13 Whitchurch 3---08
A good second half performance that saw Whitechurch come back from 5 points down to win the City Division Junior B Football League Semi Final against Passage at Ballinlough on Sunday morning.
The opening half was all about Passage as their strong running and inter passing had Whitechurch in all sorts of trouble. Once Passage opened the scoring inside a minute with a Ben Daly point it looked as the Harbour side would have the upper hand. But Whitechurch were right back in the game on six minutes when Sean Keane had the ball in the Passage net.
Passage and Whitechurch exchanged points, before Kevin O’Brien saw his low shot beat Darren Dinneen to put Passage 1—3 to 1—1 in front. Passage tagged over three points from Donna Long, Stephen Kenny and Aaron Horan to let the score At 1—06 to 1—1 with 20 minutes gone. Passage playing fast attacking football were well on top in midfield, and two more points followed before half time from Eoin Walsh and Long, Whitechurch narrowed the score to 5 points when Sean Keane and Barry Harnedy put points on the board.
The second half saw Passage turn in to the strong wind and they were soon in trouble , Whitechurch opened the scoring with three fast points, before Kenny had a Passage point , to stretch the lead to 4points.
But the game turned six minutes into the second half, a Whitechurch attack saw their number ten Damien Hourigan finish to the net to let one point in it, 1—9 to 2—05.
Whitechurch were level two minutes later Keane putting over a nice point from play.
Passage rallied and Donna Long had them in front again with a good point from play.
Then another mix up in the Passage defence saw Whitechurch pounce for their third goal, Harnedy getting the all important touch to beat Kind in the Passage goal.
Passage tried hard to pull back the two point lead, Kenny put over one point, while Ronan Cooney also had a point to let it 1—13 to 3—08. Passage forwards had opportunities to level at end with Kenny going right through but saw his shot just go over the bar, Kevin O’Brien also had a great chance for the Harbour side but his shot hit the side netting.
Overall a very good game of football with Passage unlucky not to get another chance in a replay, Whitechurch played a lot better in the second half and came back for a good victory.
