U14 Football County Final
FINNEGAN’S CLASS WINS IT FOR PASSAGE
Passage Under 14 Football team advanced to the Under 14 Boys County B Football Final after overcoming a very strong Fermoy side 3—10 to 3—05 at Ballinlough on Wednesday evening.
Passage were fast out of the blocks and were a goal up inside the first three minutes, half forward Milosz Paczkowski moving the ball on to Conor Coughlan who found the in running Luke Hanlon who gave the Fermoy keeper Eoin Canty no chance as he finished to the net. Jack Dorgan increased the lead a minute later with a fine point from play.
It got better for Passage on 12 minutes when Jack Heffernan put a penalty away to make it 2—01 to no score.
Fermoy opened their account with a point from Jake Carr on 14 minutes but three points on the go from Dorgan, Conor Coughlan and Milosz had Passage well in control coming up to the break. Fermoy raised their game, Carr hit over a good point from play before full forward Duncan Ekechukwu finished off a good Fermoy move with a good goal. Passage well in control around the middle with midfielder Cillian Quinlan doing tremendous work, hit back with points from Hanlon, and Milosz, but Fermoy were far from finished, Carr again put over a point before Sean Power made it 2—03 to 2—06 with a goal on the stroke of half time.
The second half was a very exciting affair with both sides throwing caution to the wind attacking the opposition at every opportunity.
Fermoy’s Dion McCormack cut the difference to two points with a pointed free, but then in what was the move of the match, Jamie McCarthy brought the ball out of defence, found Liam Power, who in turn put Jack Heffernan away, his first time pass inside put Luke Hanlon in and he finished sweetly to the net past a helpless Eoin Canty in the Fermoy goal.
At the other end Passage keeper Calum Finnegan was bringing off some fantastic saves as he denied Fermoy on three occasions. Passage again gained the upper hand as points followed from Conor Coughlan, and two from Alex Murphy, in between Fermoy’s Ben Twomey made it 3—09 to 2—05 with 10 minutes remaining.
Fermoy battled away as they laid siege to the Passage goal, but some outstanding defensive play from Tomas Harrington, Cillian Murphy, and Jack O. Mahony and some heroic saves from Calum Finnegan denied Fermoy.
Fermoy did pull a goal back with minutes remaining as Jack Quinlan gave the Passage keeper no chance with a well taken penalty.
But it was all too late as Passage ran out winners 3—10 to 3—05 and a County Final meeting with Ballinascarthy.
In a very good team performance Passage had excellent players in Midfield pairing of Liam Power and Cillian Quinlan, Luke O’ Hanlon, Jack Heffernan, Milosz Paczkowski were the pick of the forwards while in defence Tomas Harrington, Cillian Murphy, Jack O’ Mahony and keeper Calum Finnegan were outstanding.
Fermoy were well served by Jack Quinlan, Dion Mc Cormack, Duncan Ekechukwu, Jake Carr, Sean Power.
