- by Noel Collins
Once again Passage West GAA Club was the place to be last Saturday as the Ladies Football Club Under Age Section ran the biggest Underage Blitz in the country for the girls 8/10 age groups.
Organised by Francis Mc Eveney and his volunteers the Blitz had 92 Teams taking part, with clubs from nine counties, Antrim, Dublin, Wexford, Kilkenny, Waterford, Clare, Tippeary, Limerick, while every club in Cork were represented.
The Mammoth Blitz started with a Parade of the teams in their club colours and club banners, led by players from the various Cork Inter County teams, two bands led the parade, The Carrigaline Pipe Band and The Rebel Cork band.
The teams paraded from St Peters to Manning Park where they were addressed by Ladies Football President, Marie Hickey, Muster Councils, Jerome Casey, Cork County Board Hon Secretary, Kieran Keane, and councillor Marcia Dalton deputising for the County Lord Mayor.
The action got under way for all the teams on the 25 Pitches provided, while 25 referees officiated all day. The whole day was a family affair with face painting, sports shops , Disney characters, first aid courses, food outlet and a DJ playing music as the huge crowd that had traveled from far and near enjoyed the day.
The organisers were blessed with the day, while all the volunteers made sure everything was catered for, parking was provided in the local schools, and adjoining car park, with a shuttle bus service from the town to Manning Park.
The day finished off with a big disco for the children in the clubhouse, while the many volunteers took a well deserved rest.
Thanks to Francis Mc Eveney and his group of volunteers for the fantastic organisation in running such a huge undertaking, the planning and organising is a year long operation Thanks to Oonagh and John and all the Bar staff that made it such a wonderful occasion, but most of all thanks to all the teams that came to take part, and as the motto is in running the blitz, ‘It’s not the winning that matters, but it’s the taking part that matters.’
All the children went home with happy memory’s of a great day in Passage West and looking forward to returning next year.
